But THIS time, it’s Science!

Telegraph article: “Earth heading for ‘mini ice age’ within 15 years”:

The earth is 15 years from a “mini ice-age” that will cause bitterly cold winters during which rivers such as the Thames freeze over, scientists have predicted.

Solar researchers at the University of Northumbria have created a new model of the sun’s activity which they claim produces “unprecedentedly accurate predictions”.

They said fluid movements within the sun, which are thought to create 11-year cycles in the weather, will converge in such a way that temperatures will fall dramatically in the 2030s.

What’s that you say? “Global warming”? Haha, we were just kidding about that, it’s CLIMATE CHANGE, it’s always been climate change, and really, why would you ever not trust the scientists?*

I’m sure THIS attempt to predict the climate over ten years into the future is going to work out flawlessly.

*I once read something on Twitter where the poster, with the utmost seriousness, wondered if people would start finally taking global warming seriously if they just called it climate change. My reaction to this scintillating logic is left up to the reader to puzzle out.

This reminds me of the last fear-mongery article I read about scientists predicting total environmental and civilizational disaster in the next 20 years or so. I thought to myself, the only thing that would make this better is if Paul Ehrlich was involved in this report, since nothing would give it less credibility in my eyes than the involvement of someone with 40+ years of being spectacularly and totally wrong. Any guesses on who the first quote was from?

Are there really people with such blind trust in scientists that they can continue to see these types of reports be released and think to themselves, “This time I’m sure they’re super serial”.

    • Now I want to see/write a dark comedy where the scientists figure out that something bad REALLY IS about to happen (like C’thulhu arising) and they suddenly realize they’ve cried wolf a few too many times…
