[SPOILER!]How can Moriarty Have Faked his Death?

I think it’s been long enough since the episode to talk about this openly. So, as everybody knows, at the end of “The Empty Hearse” this happened: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJl5EPBa2Bw

So, there are several things that could have happened. I’m inclined to believe that Moriarty is dead and this is a hoax, but that doesn’t mean I’m right. So, can Moriarty have done it? I think so. Let’s watch the suicide scene itself, from “The Reichenbach Fall”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akAOxEoPrOo

So, a few points:

1) Sherlock never checks the body. No pulse is taken, nothing like that. He just backs up and stares.

2) Moriarty’s brain has not been blown out! A gunshot point blank like that will basically explode your head open. Moffat originally said that this was because at 9:30 on BBC he couldn’t show something that graphic, but with the “Did you miss me?” line the whole thing might on a whole new meaning.

3) And so, it’s quite possible Moriarty had a blood pack hidden underneath his shirt. He falls backward, the pack bursts, blood spills everywhere. Sherlock has his own problems to deal with, and doesn’t check the body.

4) So what body do they find later when they clean up the mess?

Well, in the original stories Moriarty has a brother who looks just like him. They could easily make it a twin.

I don’t think the writers will be so cheap as to have the twin be the Moriarty who comes back, or have the twin be the Moriarty Sherlock meets on the rooftop.

Instead, I think that after Sherlock’s fake suicide Moriarty switched the body with that of his twin. Who would question it? It’s not like Sherlock would be available to ID it.

Now, this is all assuming that Moriarty faked the suicide. If he didn’t, there are quite a lot of other possibilities, but that’s a subject for another post.

What do you think?

  1. Syllabus says:

    5) Moriarty’s dead, and this is one of his lieutenants (or someone else) trying to spook the hell out of everybody. Simpler, IMO.
